Presicion Workstation 670 - additional processor question

Hi all,

I currently have a Dell Precision Workstation 670 with single processor (Tag #4zvyk51).  It has a Xeon 3.2GHz 800FSB chip in it.  I'd like to add a second chip (the motherboard supports it).

My question is: can I just pick up another 3.2 Xeon processor and plop it in there?  And if so, where do I another fan tube so the air is directed out of the case?  I noticed the fan cover on the current chip has a number of F3956 but can't find anything on this.

Thanks.
Jaison

You will need to purchase a processor with a compatible or identical sSpec (SLXXX) this number is etched on the bottom of the actual processor; it’s a revision code designation: It defines the parameters of the processors; some revisions of the same speed are compatible, some are identical, and some are not compatible.

If you use incompatible processors, the system will beep, I/O panel light codes will indicate errors, and the computer will not boot-up.

You may have to pull the actual processor installed to look at the specific sSpec, and purchase an identical one; some software will list this information, like Everest, and SiSoftware Sandra.

You will also require a heat sink, a VRM, and a fan shroud; some EBay seller’s are selling the entire kit (heat sink, shroud, VRM) for under $ 100.

Thanks Chipstone, I didn't realize that.  I will check it out.

Yes, you may find the required parts on eBay. But sometimes you just can't. In this latter case, I would recommend a very serious british online store, where I purchased my additional heatsink/shroud/VRM when I upgraded my own Xeon 3.2 GHz Nocona Precision 670 !

They are not really cheap, but nevertheless, the whole parts plus the second CPU came out at half the price I would have paid if I would have purchased the upgrade kit from Dell.

Hope this helps.
