I assume because you said a "new' Dell that you are running Windows XP and by the "new one (small)" you mean a USB connector. Try this HP site and see if it helps. With HP printers you have to follow the install directions perfectly. The USB connector can only fit in to the USB port, it would not fit in the other ports.

I have the same HP. It's the combo printer, scanner, fax, right? Did you run the CD first? Do that, and then make the USB and power connections.
