Problem installing memory in Dimension 4600

Question

I currently have 512mb memory in my computer (2 x 256 pc2700 modules).  I've purchased 2 x 1gb pc3200 modules and installed them in accordance with the Dell instructions.  When I turn on the computer, the motherboard beeps at me and then just doesn't  work.  I don't know if the modules are defective and don't know how to check them.  My question is, do the beeps mean that the modules are defective or that I've done something wrong.   Any advice/assistance would be greatly apprecciated.

dahlgrenuk There is a possibility that the new 2 x 1gb modules are not compatible with 4600.  Remove the new RAM and use only the 'old' 2 x256mb modules and see if the 4600 boots correctly. Bev.
