The system completely locks up when I start the program. Needless to say both computer are running extremely slow as it has been a while that they have been defragmented. I have cleaned out the temp. internet files, temp files, and cookies, as well as run the windows update. I have also run virus scans and scan disks which have turned up nothing. In addition to being very slow, my computer locks up quite a bit, sometimes while even booting up and my parents computer has starting having pop-up windows coming up every few seconds even when not connected to the internet. The only way to solve either problem is to restart. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Run AdAware from www.lavasoftusa.com. Download it, open it, update it, and run it.
Also, run defrag from Safe Mode, tap F8 on startup.
Go to RUN from the startup menu and type in MSCONFIG. Go to the Startup folder and untick all Startup items. These are the background programs that often interfere when trying to defrag. You'll then have to restart your computer. After defragmenting, 'retick' all the startup items and restart computer once more.

dnc615.
Check for spyware and run your A/V with updated definitions. Try defraging in safe mode and see if this article can help.

Download Spybot to search for spyware programs. Can you boot to safe mode and defrag?

You may want to try the following:
Go to RUN from the startup menu and type in MSCONFIG. Go to the Startup folder and untick all Startup items. These are the background programs that often interfere when trying to defrag. You'll then have to restart your computer. After defragmenting, 'retick' all the startup items and restart computer once more.
Hope this helps.
