Problem with USB Joystick

I recently attempted to install a Gravis USB joystick.  When I plugged it in it was recognized and the drivers were installed.  I was told to reboot to activate which I did.  On restart, the joystick shows up in the Device Manager as an Human Interface Device and appears to be functioning properly, however, when I look for it in the Game Controllers program I does not appear and it is not on the list of devices if I click Add Controller.  In addition, no programs recognize the presence of the Joystick.  I have worked this through several times attempting to resolve it.  I have removed all drivers, including the USB drivers and reinstalled them but to no avail.  The connection between HID and Game Controller is simply not being made.  Does anyone have any thoughts?  I really don't want to go back to using a regular MIDI port for my Joystick if I can help it.

RBehnke,

Welcome to the Dell Community Forum (DCF).
* Click Start- (Settings)- Control Panel
* Look to the left. If listed, click "Switch to Classic View"
* Double-click Game Controllers. What is listed?

Thanks for the reply.  There are no game controllers listed, nor am I able to add a new one since when I attempt this I get the message "Your Game Port or Game Port Drivers are not properly configured."  As mentioned in my original posting, I have already uninstalled all the related drivers I can find and allowed them to re-install on startup.  Nothing.

Any Ideas?

RBehnke,

* Press the Windows + Pause/Break keys
* Click the Hardware tab and/or the Device Manager button
* Right click Universal Serial Bus Controllers
* Click Scan for hardware changes
* Close all boxes when finished

Well, that was interesting!  I did as you said without luck until I also scanned for new hardware under the Human Interface Devices section.  Now I get an entry in the Game Controllers table that says "USB Adaptor".  When I look at properties the cursor in the target is bouncing around and all the button indicators are popping on and off.  Re-calibrating does nothing nor does reseting to defaults.  The controller seems to be sending out random signals.  I think it is trying to read the USB port directly rather than through a Joystick driver.  My documentation says that the Game Controllers table should read "HID Game Controller: 4 axis 8 button joystick".  This looks like progress but I'm not sure.  Any other thoughts before I chuck it and buy a sound card with a MIDI port?

I'm trying to use a QuickShot QS-206 joystick on my Dim 4700. I don't have a gameport, so I bought a USB 15-pin adapter. But the system doesn't recognize the device at all when I plug it in.

The only "driver" I can find online is actually a document describing how to configure the joystick as a game controller on Win95/98 using built-in support. This is all the QuickShot site seems to have. I've followed the instructions as they seem to apply to my system (WinXP Pro) but when I try to set up the HID this way I get a message that my gameport or its driver is not installed properly.

My other joystick, which is a much more recent Logitech Attack 3 model, had no problem being recognized by the system, even before I installed the driver that came with it.

The QS-206 works fine on my other system, which is running Win2000 and has a gameport, so I know the joystick is not malfunctioning. I'm surprised that I get no response from my other system. Any suggestions are welcome.
