Problems creating a boot disk
I have a 4 months old dimension 4100 with Windows ME and it´s not possible to create a boot disk with the startup disk tool of ME.
During the procedure the system demands for various files with the extension "ebd" (for example autoexec.ebd, format.ebd, ...). But this extension doesn´t exist neither in the Windows folder on the hard disk nor on the Windows CD.
Does anybody know that problem and has a solution ?
Many thanks for answers

Have you perhaps reformatted your hard drive since getting it? Or changed the install path in the registry? Usually, when creating a boot disk, the system copies required files from the install CD, or the image of it on the HD if it exists.
The ebd files are held on the CD in \WIN98\Base2.cab which should also be found in C:\Windows\Options\Cabs (assuming -
(a) You have not reformatted, and
(b) The O/S was factory installed.

I didn´t reformat my hard drive, but I made a system restore two times, perhaps this will cause the problems.
Indeed, the install path is changed to Creative..., but I didn´t do it. I presume the shortly installed Liveware 3.0 could have done this.
The O/S was factory installed.
I will try to give in the paths \WIN98\Base2.cab on the Win ME disk or C:\Windows\Options\Cabs as you proposed, and hope it will work.

you say
- Indeed, the install path is changed to Creative...,
- but I didn´t do it. I presume the shortly installed
- Liveware 3.0 could have done this.
I presume this is something to do with a sound card? Where did you find the install path info? I meant the install path for the O/S which is in the registry key "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\SourcePath" which should be either D:\WIN98* or C:\Windows\Options\Cabs.
If you are confident messing around in the registry then you can adjust this, but BEWARE, if you make an error you could make your system inoperative.
Before changing anything, click on Registry|Export Registry and make a copy of the file onto your desktop (or other location you will remember should you need to recover from a failure!!)
Normal disclaimer here - I'm happy to offer advice but accept no liability if it goes wrong.
(*substitute D: with letter of CDROM drive if different)

The registry key "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\SourcePath" contained a Creative folder (something like "C:\Programs\Creative\wdm", when I remember right). I didn´t change the path to that, so I think it really happened when I installed Creative´s Liveware 3.0. Yesterday I changed the source path in the registry to "C:\Windows\Options\Cabs", as you proposed, and now creating the boot disk worked without any problems.
Thank you very much for your wonderful help, I already tried to solve that problem some weeks.
By the way, what does that mean:
