problems uninstalling a cd drive
I had a friend install a cdr-w in my 8100 a while ago and I recently bought a 4550 and I wanted to transfer the dvd drive that was in the old 8100. When I took it out, I noticed that the cdr-w was on the same bus (i think thats what that cord is called) as the hard drive and the dvd was on it's own channel. I put the cdr-w (the drive that's staying in the 8100) on its own channel and set it as master, and tried to boot and it worked but it gave me an error that said it didnt see secondary drive 0 and 1 and primary drive 1. All of the drives in the bios are set to auto. Should I turn off all the drives that are not hooked up?
Basically, heres my question
1. Where do I set the jumpers on my hard drive and cd drive?
2. What should I set the devices to in my bios?
Thanks

WOO HOO, I already know I have a problem, how bout a solution?????
Anywho, I have tried just about every combonation of jumper settings on the cd and hardrive possible, none have given me favorable results. Im assumeing now that its a problem in the BIOS. It it working, it loads windows but its hardcore jimmy style, I get mucho errors after the bios loads about not recognizing primary and secondary drives. Should everything in the bios be set to auto or some off?

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.
Go into the system bios and turn off any IDE ports which do not
have a device attached to them. So...since you don't have a device
attached to the Secondary Drive 1, you should set that option in the
bios to off. Any other IDE ports that have devices on them should be
set to AUTO. It is best if you jumper all your drives to Cable Select as it
makes it easier for the system to configure them correctly. Older IDE devices require
the Master/Slave setup, but with today's newer PNP capable devices, it is best to
simply use CABLE SELECT and let the system bios provide the configuration.
