Problems with IP Address

Having problems with our Dell Dimension 9100 desktop.  It can not find an IP Address to connect to the internet.  We have DSL and my son can connect with no problem using his laptop.  Nothing has been added or changed but it may take 10 times loggin off and on before it finally finds an IP Address.

Can anyone help.

Have you tried contacting your Internet Provider?

Best section to post this in, would be the Networking, Internet, Wireless forum HERE, this forum is for Desktop Hardware.

That really sounds like an ISP related issue.  I would call them and ask if they can tell you a STATIC IP to set.

To grab a new IP do the following:

Start | Run | type cmd for a Command Prompt.

Enter ipconfig /release

then

ipconfig /renew

If you know how to make a batch file you can enter the commands, and then just click on it when needed.  Let me know if you need help with that.

Is the PC on a network with your son's laptop? You might try resetting your router by turning it off for 5 min and then back on.

Have you scanned for malware lately?

Have you tried doing a PC Restore to last date available before the problem started? Personal files won't be affected but you will have to reinstall any Microsoft updates originally installed after the date used for the restore.

Did you check if your software firewall lock is engaged so the system can't get out to the ISP for an IP address? If this is ZoneAlarm, right-click the icon in the system tray and see if the locks have checks next to them.

Did you check the activity lights on the ethernet port on rear of the tower? And did you look in Device Manager to see if there's a yellow ! or red X next to the entry for the ethernet port?
