problems with NVIDIA 6800GT

Hi Guys,
I have an INNO3D GeForce 6800GT (NVIDIA chip), which I recently installed on my Dell Dimesion 8400
full spec  here -  http://support.euro.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim8400/SM/specs.htm#wp1052308
I have been having a few problems:
While running AoE3 demo the screen randomly goes blank, the pc beeps and I have to switch the PC off to restart. I have tried updating the motherboard system drivers and have the latest card drivers from the NVIDIA website.
The next day I got a system error saying that the graphics card was not getting enough power and, as such, the peformance was being lowered. The PSU is supposed to deliver 350W and the minimum requirement of the card is 300W.
Any ideas?

Yes I did - the Graphics card has a 6 hole power socket, and an adapter to connect it to two power supplies from the PSU. The Dimension 8400 has a single power plug from the PSU which is labelled P6 and it fits perfectly into the graphics card, this is the lead I used.

Did you make sure to connect the video card to the power supply? It doesn't get enough power just from being plugged into the motherboard.

I think P10 (black color) is the correct one, not P6 (white color).

Well spotted - It was the one labelled P10 that I used  - sorry I left the message from the office away from my PC.

you gettihng the exact same thing happen as I did. I was even playing AOEIII demo on my 8400. Here is what BFG (my card is a Nvidia BFG 6800GTOC) emailed me:

I am now in search of the "oh so ever hard to find" psu that is compatable with an 8400.

Thanks for the help, it sounds like I need a new PSU. I know nothing about them, how do I make sure what I buy is compatible with my Dimesion 8400?

I'm currently trying to find one that is compatable. VERY HARD. Some people have bought a standard ATX psu but had to cut into the back of the psu to make it work (I think due to an on/off switch on the back). I don't want to cut anything though.

I'm going to call PC Power & Cooling today. Everbody says they make great psu's and I know they have one's compatable with Dell, HOWEVER the 8400 is not one of them. Another user called them and they said they would work with him on getting a psu for his computer. They would even customize it to make sure it fit (no PC altering, no cutting, just unplug the old and plug in the new).

Here is the website.

Another user said he's going to try this psu.

It IS an ATX but he says there shouldn't be any cutting of the PC because there's no on/off switch on the back. Unless you know for sure about the cutting part I wouldn't risk it. I'd hate to spend $100 just to find out that I do need to cut the back of the PC. I would just go to PC Power & Cooling and give them a call.

I provided their "Dell Power Selector" for you. The 8400 is not on there but at the bottom is the telephone number to call. Let me know if you call them before I do and what they did. Good Luck

Thanks for that, I have seen their website and sent off an e-mail, the problem is greater as I am in the Uk so I'll have to get it shipped.

Is it not possible to get a PSU directly from Dell??

In the meantime, does your pc crash less if you turn the settings down on games?

Or how about an external power supply unit just for the graphics card? Does such a thing excist?

Dell's stance on this whole thing is the 8400 only comes with a 250w,300w, and 350w psu and they don't recommend anything above the 350w (which is small in today's world). Yes my system will crash less when the settings are turned down. This is because the card isn't working that hard and the 350w is enough to supply it in that mode but the whole reason I bought this card was to run games (Mainly AOEIII) on the max settings so I'm going to try and get another psu.

If you can handle running on the very low settings then you'll have to debate which is more important to you, paying the money for a new psu or staying with your current one and playing on low settings. I've never heard of an external power supply but that's not to say they don't make them. I'm getting ready to call PC Power & Cooling now so I will let you know what they say. Hope this helps.

I'm in the middle of an e-mail discussion with them now, I think I'll be going for the silencer 470 dell...

After talking to PC Power & Cooling the only psu they can get into a Dell 8400 is the Silencer 470 Dell BUT ONLY if your mother board has a 4 prong connector (that the current psu is hooked to) AND a 24 prong connector (that the current psu is hooked to). They said that is the only way a Silencer 470 Dell would be compatable with an 8400. If you don't have those 2 connectors coming from your current psu to the motherboard then you are out of luck (This is the boat I'm in).

I'm going to see if I can get an ATX psu and maybe get that into my 8400. Right now I just want to scream because noone can get a psu to put into an 8400. If you find out anything please let me know.

I just know I get that stupid " not enough power" message when I play the AOEIII Demo. My video card reduces the settings to be able run on my 350w psu. When I contacted the guy from BFG he stated that a 350w psu just isn't enough to run the 6800GT. I know the 6800GT has a minumum requirement of 350watts and that seems to be accurate. 350w is the minimum but to be able to run higher settings we need a bigger psu.

I've read many of your posts and I have no idea why you and a few people with the dim 8400 are having trouble handling the 6800 GT. 350w is more then enough to handle the 6800 GT. I have heard people saying the ATI X850 XT PE working in the 8400 and that card supposely draws more power.

Back then when the 8400 was still for sale, they had the 6800 GTO as an option for the system, and almost everyone had no problem running that card in their 8400. I know the GTO is a little weaker than the GT but I doubt dell would ship a card for a system that it couldn't run or barely handle. What I'm saying is if the 8400 can handle the x850xt and the 6800gto, it should be able to run the GT version.

Anyways I know that doesn't answer or help you in your quest of getting a new psu. Good luck in finding a compatible psu.

Well I have checked my connections and I seem to be the lucky one with a 4 pin and a 24 pin connector to the motherboard. What are your connections then? ISn't it odd that we have the same PC with a difference set up?

Anyway I have just spent almost $200 including shipping to the UK and I am not filled with confidence it is going to work.

I also have to decide whether to bother buying a cage fan in order to get rid of the enoying boot up error even though I know it will make no difference to the operation of the PC...
