Hello-If you use your computer hard and it's been more than a year or two since you have reformatted and reinstalled your programming, you may want to consider it. I believe reformatting is a last resort, but I have also found that my Win98SE "loses it's edge" after a year or so of digital flogging.

Have you tried terminating Norton System Works? That program is the biggest resource hog you've got. Other than that, the only thing I can think of is to run system maintenance, especially scandisk and defrag. Do you run these regularly?

tontoe,

Do you have dellmmkb.exe running? I don't know if this feature is available in Win 98se or not but it has been known to use 90%+ of your cpu.

Bring up your task manager ( ctrl/alt/del ) and see if it's running.

End task on it to see if that's your problem.

Also look for it in your startup folder and msconfig/startup tab and delete / uncheck it.

This will disable your keyboards " hotkeys ".

You can also try the upgrade linked below.

I'm sorry I don't know more about it.

Thanks for the help, guys. I think it's going to have to be a re-format/re-install of Win 98 - I've stripped out every TSR except mouse driver & explorer and it's still the same... and I've mislaid my diagnostics disk.

In addition to the other suggestions, I would take into consideration the age of your system and run your Dell Diagnostics disk to rule out a failing piece of hardware.

The Dell diagnostics for your machine is still downloadable from Dell.
