Processor usage
I have a dimension 4100 with 866 p3, 256 ram, 10 + 40 gig hard drives, GeForce 3, Soundblaster live, CD + CDRW. When I run tests on pcpitstop it shows 40 to 50% processor usage. I have disabled all programs running in backround that i don't need to run the machine as well as my anti virus but it doesn't help. It also shows high usage when i run system monitor when i am not on line, i have a usrobotics controler based ext. modem which should not put a strain on the processor. My machine is running ok and my benchmarks on 3Dmark2001se are ok (5052) but i am sure it could be better. Does anyone know what could be causing this high usage. I have also turned off wall paper and screensaver on my desktop but no help.

Got to the following site:
http://www.iarsn.com/index.html#/archive.html
and download TaskInfo 2000. This program will show you every process running on your system and allow to figure out what is taking up the CPU cycles. Note that the link is to an older version of TaskInfo which works quite well and is free. There is, however, a new version available (TaskInfo 2002) which has a registration fee.

Hi. I tried that and the taskmanager says I'm running at about 80-95% idle which is as it should be. I don't see anything taking up a lot of cycles, but when I check performance on my computer's system icon in the control pannel it tells me that my system resources are running at only at 40-50% free. This seems really low and my computer's been slowing down to a crawl when I use simple programs like word.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

Resources have nothing to do with CPU cycles nor do they have anything to do with the amount of memory installed in your system. You don't say which verison of Windows you are running so it's hard to be specific, but in general you should be able to boot with 80 to 90% free resouces and continue to run until the % free resources gets into the teens. If you are not booting with 80 to 90% free resources, you need to get rid of the unnecessary garbage that runs from startup. See the following:

http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_index.htm
This assumes you are running Windows 98 or ME.
