Question about clean install and service code
I need to do a clean install on a Dimension 4400 which came with Windows xp. I am wondering if I do a clean install will the Dell Accessories program, which shows the Express service code, be deleted? Will a clean intall wipe out the service code and service tag numbers? I looked under the Dell ftp which has an Express Service code.exe. Is this the same program that identifies your service code? Thanks to everyone who responds.

When you ask for service, you will only need to give over your Service Tag, not the express. If you format your HDD and that program is not reinstalled by the Dell recovery CD, You can easily find your Express code by going to the Dell service site, inputing your service tag, which will reveal your express code.
An Express Service Code is simply a mathematical conversion of your System Service Tag into a purely numeric format allowing for easy entry into Dell's automated call-routing system. Enter this number, using a touch-tone telephone, into the automated call-routing system when contacting Dell for assistance.
A System Service Tag is a five to seven-digit alpha-numeric code located on a sticker that can be found on the bottom of portable systems or back panel of desktop, workstation, or server systems. This code is also available as part of the System Setup Program available to you during the startup of your system. The System Service Tag is programmed into the NVRAM (BIOS) of your system by Dell during the manufacturing process. The customer support applications that Dell technicians and other support personnel use to help you when you contact Dell for assistance use this System Service Tag to display all of the configuration and support history information for your system
