RAM Question

This question doesn't pertain to a Dell system, it is just a general Memory question

I have an older motherboard, it's an Intel 440LX/EX (Not sure) and I want to put the max amount of RAM in it, it can support 256 MB in 2 128 chips but the motherboard manual doesn't say what type of SDRAM.... The RAM that was in there was taken out and given to someone so I don't have anything to reference.

I found a site that I can buy PC66, PC100, or PC133 at the same price, so my intention would be to buy PC133 and if it doesn't support it, will it function at the lower speed? or will it not work at all?

It doesn't list a brand name, it just says that it is a major brand name.

Can someone help me out here

I can get PC133 for the same price as PC66 on a website, but if I buy PC133 and my motherboard only supports PC66, will it be that far backward compatible?

There isn't a yes or no answer, only maybe.  If you provide the manufacturer & model number it's possible I or someone else has tried and will know.  It also matters what brand of RAM you are using.  What website has 133 & 66 for the same price?

is it also backward compatible with PC66, cause the motherboard might actually be that old

It's a Pentium 2 333 Mhz Slot 1 Cartridge with ATA/33 IDE Ports, if that helps determine if it would have PC66, PC100, or PC133 capabilities.

The pc133 should work even if the computer uses pc100 it will slow down to that speed but if you buy pc100 and the computer needs pc133 it will not work.

Your mobo almost definately uses 66mhz from what you've said.  Who made the mobo & what model is it?  You can go to www.crucial.com with that info and it till well you exactly what memory is supposed to be used.

Without the manufacturer & model number of the motherboard, there isn't much else to help you with.  You also might want to rethink buying something from them.  They have a fairly poor rating at resellerratings.com.  http://www.resellerratings.com/seller2164.html

Most if not all Intel 440 boards were pc100 sdram, so pc100 or pc133 low density sdram will work.
