RAM question

ok i have a dell 2400 and recently i put this ram in http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145450

when i bought it, it only had 256. now wen i put the ram in it just made a noise and it wouldnt turn on or anything. then i put the original back in and it worked fine. then i looked through the manual and found out that my comp could only handle up to pc2700 and the one i bought was pc3200. but i thought that if thats the case it would still see the ram but just use it at 2700. does anybody have any idea of wat is the problem or wat type of ram i should buy? any help would be much appreciated.

You should buy compatible memory from Crucial.

BTW, correct PC3200 RAM will clock down to PC2700.
