I already called tech support, after being on hold for 1 1/2 hours they transfered me to customer service, put on hold again, told me I need to talk with tech support, tech support says 2x512MB DDR2 SDRAM @ 333MHZ = 1024 aka 1GB of ram ...well no duh you technical genie @ss! the fact remains that I ordered 1GB DDR2 SDRAM @ 400MHZ ...the reason I did this is to upgrade to 4GB DDR2 SDRAM @ 400MHZ not 4x512 DDR2 SDRAM @ 333MHZ equaling 2GB
plus 2x512MB DDR2 SDRAM @ 333MHZ cost a lot less than 1GB DDR2 SDRAM @ 400MHZ which is exactly what my packing slip says I reclieved but I'm looking at the guts of my computer right now and this is not what I have so I paid ALL that money for less ram than I actually ordered

should have just built my own computer lol

Maybe you should have purchased your D8400 RAM at Crucial.    Ordered addional RAM, 11.15PM 3.22.05 and received it today 3.00PM, free S&H, installed it and D8400 booted right up, checked the BIOS and the RAM is recognized as correct.

why should I have to buy ram from crucial when I ordered it through dell? if thats the case maybe I should have bought a case, a video/sound card, a mother board, a hard drive, a modem, a dvd/cd burner, a monitor, a keyboard, a mouse, a processor, a power supply and speakers from crucial or tiger direct or zipzum! than I could have rubbed dell out of the picture altogether!

ps I do appreciate the good gesture though Bev :)

call tech support and make then send you the correct stuff. RAM is easy to swap out.

If your problem is not being solved by Tech support, call Customer Care (if your within the 21 Day return period) and tell them you want to return your computer then just reorder it and hope you get the right components.

Just so you know, the RAM runs as fast as the slowest stick, so even if you put the 400MHz sticks in, they will all run at 333MHz

I understand your pain on this but calling tech support or sales and having them make it right is still the only option. Dell is getting very bad with their support.

yeah I know

yeah well I was hoping that posting a thread might help, I'm building my own computers from now on lol

I ordered my computer on 18Feb2005 so I'm passed that window, it's just ram I'll just bite the bullet and order 2x512MB DDR2 SDRAM @ 400MHZ and that'll bring me up to 2GB which is plenty enough unless your trying to build a spaceship lol

The reason why Bev suggested purchasing RAM from crucial is that Dell tends to overcharge a lot on RAM.

And seeing that the installation of RAM is one of the easiest upgrades to do, you can save a lot of money by going that route.

I also see your point that if you were to build you entire computer from scratch, you could have saved a lot of money as well.

Personally, I would ask for an entirely new system as I would feel a bit unsure as to what else Dell may have messed up. (I think you have 21 days to request a free exhange and even the shipping is free)

And that way, you can have Dell do all the installation work without having to move a finger.

yeah well I already broke the 21 day mark, I just want the ram I ordered originally not the ram they gave me, why is it so hard for them to just put the ram I paid for in a box, send it to me, I'll put the ram they gave me into that same box and send it back to them! lol oh well, guess I'm fighting a one way battle

ooh...in that case, I guess your idea is the best one

They might be a bit hesitant because they're wondering why it took you that long to realize it.

Still, a very good idea! I had Dell replace speakers that way before

DELL is sending me the correct ram soon and I'm sending them their ram back

Believe it or not, I just discovered my Dimension 8400 was shipped the same way.  It was supposed to have PC3200 at 400 Mhtz, but was sent with 333 instead.  42 days left until it's a year old and I just discover this now.  Me not happy.  On hold with tech support.
