greatone1601,

Since Windows XP doesn't offer an "optimal" setting, click the Reference tab above then Users' Guides. Select Monitors on the next window then find your monitor. In the "Specifications" section your choices of refresh rates and the recommendations for specific resolution choices willl be shown.

If I were you I would set it to the highest possible refresh rate possible. I have mine set at 120Hz and it is not as hard on the eyes as something like 60Hz. If your monitor is set to something low right now, when you turn it higher you should see and feel a notable difference in visuals and smoothness of the mouse cursor...anyways i did and i couldn't believe the difference. Good Luck

Wow...never knew changing to 75 hz would actually make a difference. It sure does though. I was getting a headache from the 60hz setting. Is it just me or is it too bright or something on 60hz?? Somethings different, thanks.

I dont wanna push it to 85, but now im tempted!

Well if your XP is recognizing the monitor it should tell you the safe rates available. If there is something like 120Hz or so in the list of safe modes go ahead and turn it up to 120. I have an M780 monitor i got with my Dell and it is running good at 120MHz. I would think the sony could handle it as well.

Thank you all so much for sharing this advice. I was getting eye strain with the 60 Hz. Didn't know it could make such a difference.

Hello,
I would not set the refresh rate any higher than the Max recommended by your particular model monitor. Going higher than the max recommended for your particular model monitor you will only be beating up on the monitor and shorten its life. It's like making a 80 year old guy run a 4 minute mile. I would say 80 hrz for a Sony top of the line CRT would be the safe max..........

As long as the “Hide modes that this monitor cannot display” box is checked, you can safely run the highest available refresh rates.

Do you really think that Sony is going to offer a refresh rate that will damage their monitors? If anything, their going to set the maximum refresh rate on the low side, in order to limit warranty returns.

I would hope 80Hz is not max for a sony........if so take it back for a refund.
