Refurbished???

Any opinions on purchasing a Dell refurbished unit?  If they are returned units are the problems fixed?  Does that mean you will avoid all problems?  Are they really a deal?

Thanks. I saw some other posts regarding fan noise but didn't read them.  How do you know which models have the problem?  If the unit is refurbished wouldn't they have fixed the fan?

I purchased a Dell Dimension 8250 two months ago.

No problems so far.

I would stay away from older models that Dell no longer sells.

I bought my refurbished 8250 about two or three months ago and it was a really good deal.

The fan is an NMB (which is supposed to be the quiet fan) and is somewhat noisy at times, but it's probably the fastest machine you can buy for the money (until the 8300 becomes a refurb).

The best thing to me about the 8250 is that even the cheapest model you buy is competent (at least a P4 2.4, good size hard drive, enough RAM, etc...)

From what i've read, the DATECH fans are loud and were being replaced by NMB.  Overall my machine is quiet, I'm just very picky about this.  Like I said, I got an NMB fan so I guess they are fixing the problem.  Maybe they'll improve on this too.

i bought both of mine as refurbs. the PS on the Dim started making a slight noise after a few months, it was replaced. The backlight on the inspiron went out a couple months ago, replaced. Other than that both machines are excellent.

i saved boatloads of money on them, mostly because I bypassed the 'free memory', 'free printer', '$100 off' and such, I wanted and waited for the '$500 off' to come around. It's not very often, but when it does, jump on it.

I have two 8100's, one of which was purchased as "new" and the other as "refurbished".  Both have been excellent machines and neither have produced any problems.  The Refurb machine is the oldest at about two years now and again has had no problems or issues.  Look over the options carefully to pick a machine which meets your needs of today and provides a reasonable margin for potential usage requirements in the future to get the best bang for your buck.

I have purchased two 8200s over a year ago. Both problem free refurbs..

I have two 4550s on order now. You might want to check out the 220 4550s for $708 available now. Outfitted very well and the same configuration new with a little extra here and a little less there is $989. Both have free shipping.

Enjoy your Dell

I just bought 2 refurbed 8250s over the last 2 months. Both had minor cosmetic issues but work flawlessly.

The first 8250 (my primary PC and well configured) actually had the wrong model number on the badge that surrounds the power button (it was labeled as a Dimension 4550). Not a big deal - there was zero question that I got the right PC (Bios and boot up reported 8250 as did motherboard, etc) - someone put the wrong model/badge on the front. The 4550 and the 8250 use identicle chasis/cases.  Solution: Dell sent me a new badge (2 day air). Problem solved. $400 cheaper than the lowest price I could find for a new one configured the same way (I checked Dell's site almost daily for a few months).

The second 8250  (second PC for family/kids - integrated sound - basic configuration) had a minor scratch/gouge on the pannel that covers the lower media bay.  Again - a simple call to Dell and a replacement part sent via 2 day air.  Paid $565 (delivered) for that one... Unbelievable for Dell's top of the line model.

I'd go refurb again any day. You'll save a good amount of money - if there are ANY issues, Dell backs them as if they were new. Best of all, they come packaged as new. You don't get someone's cast off/pawed manuals and software with a bunch of hastily repacked/returned goods.  I don't see how you could go wrong.

Both my inspirons were refurbished.  They both work great.  Look perfect too.  I recommend the Dell rufrb site, but like others have said, stay away from models that are no longer produced.
