Safe Mode & Fatal Errors

Sometimes when I leave my computer on--but I'm not using it--for a several hours during the day, when I return to it I get a fatal error message and have to Ctrl-Alt-Del to reboot. (Sometimes even that doesn't happen and it locks up and I must shut the computer completely off.) I don't understand why this happens. Could it be my screen saver or the sleep mode it goes into? Today I rebooted and I got a message that it was in Safe Mode with large screen icons.

My questions are: (1) why does this happen, and is there anything I can do to prevent it?, and (2) what should I do when it goes into safe mode to get back to my normal screen?

Thank you.

First, what are your power management settings. Right-click on a blank area of your desktop and select "Properties". Then select the Screen Saver tab and click on the "settings" button near the bottom. Make sure that the computer is set to never go on standby, never turn off the monitor. and never shut down the hard disks. Run like this for a while and see if the error occurs. If it doesn't go back into the power management settings and set the hard disk to shut down after however many minutes you want. Test again. You will eventually figure out which one of these settings is causing the problem.

As for safe mode, you can usually get out of it if you reboot your computer. You may get a dialog box telling you that the last time the system booted it went into safe mode and asking you what mode to boot into this time. Choose "NOrmal".
