SATA + IDE boot problems

Optiplex GX270, BIOS A03:

I'm having trouble booting to the Primary SATA drive (120GB drive that came with the system) after installing an IDE drive (Hitachi Deskstar 250GB) as the Primary Master on IDE1.  Both drives are recognized in the drive configuration in BIOS setup, and the Primary SATA drive is designated as the boot drive in Boot Setup.  The IDE drive has nothing on it to boot up, and the SATA drive cannot be found, thus the system hangs.  If I set the IDE drive to Primary slave, I can boot up the SATA but the IDE cannot be found.  Of course, if I remove the IDE, the SATA boots up just fine.

I partitioned and formatted the IDE drive, and I've also tried master, slave, and cable-select jumper settings, even jumperless...

This seems to be a fairly common problem judging by the number of posts on the tech support sites.

I am open to suggestions...

There is some extra field in that bios, if I remember correctly. I believe it's titled hard disk drive sequence, it's not the boot sequence. Make sure that the sata is first in there.
