If you have just got this system then it could be the SoundBlaster card is not installed correctly (the card also has an IDE connection on it), try re-installing the device...

Sorry Fleaman - a pernicious typo crept in:  should read "SM Bus Controller"  Blame the sticky fingures!

This machine came with onboard sound which sounded so awful I disabled it at the bios and added a SoundBlaster Audigy card which work and sound fine.  Any ideas on SM Bus Controller ?

Oliver,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.
The chipset drivers can be found

Sorry to report that installing this file does not remove the issue - namely, SM BUS CONTROLLER is still installed and still cannot find the necessary drivers.  Installing SP1 makes no difference either.  Any ideas Dell gentlemen?

Damned typos again - the above, of course, should read Not installed - sorry  ;-(

Oliver,
Install the USB 2.0 controller drivers as described.

Oliver,

I am having the same problem as you.  A couple days ago my system crashed and I had to re-install XP.  The only thing that is stilll amiss is the SM bus controller.  I also have a Sound Blaster 4 port card, but it doesn't seem to be affecting it, or any other part of my system.  I ran fdisk and scan disk, not to mention other programs to see if anything would pick it up, NADA! Did you try to uninstall and then re-install the soundblaster card.  I haven't tried that yet, but it's worth a shot, couldn't hurt any!

Tried un and reinstalling my SB Audigy card with no change - if you ever find a solution to this issue please tell me.  Don't you just love Windows?  ;-)

Oliver,
Did you install the Microsoft QFE patch for USB 2.0 support after installing the controller drivers?

Hi, Namek

Nope, just the USB2 drivers on the Dell resource cd.  Where can I find the others?  Also, what is the 'best practice, for installing these please - same as any others?

TIA

Dear Namek (or anyone else!)

Could you come back to me on this one please - where can I find the Microsoft QFE patch for USB 2.0 support ?

Oliver,
The QFE patch gets extracted from the Resource CD along with the USB 2.0 controller driver. The article I provided a link to describes how to install both the controller driver and the QFE patch. Look under the section with the heading Run the Windows XP Update.

I did a clean install from ME to 2000 8100. I had other device also. Had three of them. The chipsets, the sound card and the modem, oh, and last but not least the networking card. All of those drivers had to be installed. Without the chipset memory controller, I did'nt have any RAM.

Dear Namek

Forgive me, but this route  produces the error message that it can only be applied to versions of WindowsXP without any update packages installed.  My machine has WindowsXP SP1 installed.  Is there a way of achieving the same result with SP1 installed?

TIA

Oliver
