Scan Disc & Defrag Computer

I can not seem to find a way that scan disc and/or defrag will run without being restarted over and over again. I have tried the control alt delete to shut down programs & only leave Windows & Systray open as I was told to never close them. I have tried running in Safe Mode but it kept stopping and starting then and saying I should close programs. Do you have any suggestions of a simple resolution to this problem? I'm not that computer literate so the answer has to be put rather simply. Thanks

Scandisk can run from DOS mode so that should solve that one, defrag I don't think does.

It's not a screen saver is it?

What OS is it? On NT/2000 Task manager will show you everything that's active with processor usage. There's a Microsoft KernelToy called WINTOP for Win9x which does similar. This would show you what is using the processor.

Microsoft KernelToys I guess are still available from Microsoft Downloads but I haven't checked.

Hi- Yoou might try shutting off your screen saver...right click on your desktop, select properties, then screen saver. Select none, then ok out. then try running your defrag. Hope this helps..

go to the system information applet in the startup menu. click tools in the system configuration utility, then statup programs. write down and tell us what programs are checked off.

I did but it didn't help. However I have the problem solved now. It was my screensaver & desktop as I use WebShots for them both.

Thanks for all your help biker. It was my screen saver AND desktop as I have WebShots for both. I turned them both off and everything ran smoothly. Thanks for turning me on to Winmag - I'll find it very useful. I appreciate your response. I was really sure how this Dell Talk worked!

Thanks for the info. I ran before in DOS & it really messed up my machine. Dell told me to NEVER run in DOS mode with a Windows system. It turned out to be my screensaver. Thanks anyway.
