Scan Disk won't run.

I try to run scan disk in windows xp and it says that it needs access to files that are currently in use. I can't start it in windows, and then when I schedule it for startup i get a blue screen a couple seconds in to scan disk running. I called Dell and they said do a system restore which I said "no thanks". There has to be an easier way. Do i need to shut down all programs (except for the criticals) for scan disk to be able to run in windows? Can't figure it out. Would greatly appreciate any help...

If you have the Santa Cruz soundcard there is an easy solution to your problem, look here:

http://support.dell.com/us/en/kb/document.asp?DN=1060328

DELL also has a new driver for the Santa Cruz soundcard.
Look here:

Good luck,

Fausto

Hello! Scan Disk is no longer available with Wins XP. Wins XP has CHKDSK. Below I have pasted the inst. on how to run CHKDSK. These inst. are from Information Avenue at:
http://www.thundercloud.net/infoave/archives2002/week-12.htm

Keeping Your Windows XP Operating System Running Smooth

Scandisk, a feature of Windows 95, 98, and ME, is not a part of Windows XP; it runs an improved error checking tool called CHKDSK. It replaces scandisk and checks for file system errors and bad sectors on your hard drive. Here is how to access it:

1. Click My Computer, and then select the drive you want to check.

2. While the drive is highlighted, right mouse click and choose properties.

3. Choose Tools tab from the window that opens and then click Check Now.

4. "Check disk options" window will open; put a check in the two boxes you see for auto fix, and scan and attempt recovery of bad sectors. Then click Start.

If you are doing this on your C drive, or another drive that is accessing files, you will get a notification window asking if you want to run disk check the next time you start your system. When you restart your computer, disk check will run; you will not be able to perform other activities until the disk check is complete. We recommend doing this on a weekly basis to keep your system running smooth.

Thank you. I was able to run chkdsk without the boxes checked per your intstructions. However, if I check the two boxes (fix errors and attempt recovery) it still says it needs access to those files. Not sure if that is still to do with my sound card or not. Thanks!
