scan disk/defragment

You have programs running in the background. Use CTL-ALT-Delete and close all programs running in the background one at a time until all you have left running is explorer and systray. Or follow this link right here
for a nifty utility that will do it for you. You should also turn off your screen saver and antivirus if it is in use. Another option is to run defragment from the safe mode.

While you are at it you need to turn off as many of the programs running in the background as possible anyway. Follow this link right here for a good discussion on what you don't need to have running in the background.
