Scanner Missing

Dimension 2400 with A920 printer/scanner. XP with SP2 loaded. For some reason I suddenly cannot scan. I can print with no problem, but if I try to scan, the system returns an error message to the effect that there is a fault on the USB cable. It is not the cable or the Printer/scanner (it has been replaced by Dell Technical Support). Tech Support now suggest reloading my Operating sytem, which to me seems a bit drastic. Have reloaded drivers etc. Have run every diagnostic I can find and all check out OK. This has got me well puzzled

would suggest uninstalling the printer, scanner disconnect it from the computer, go into the web site for your make of printer ,scanner and see if there is a undate for that unit ,if there is download it to a folder, make sure you have deleted the software for the printer scanner. Install the update ,no need to install the software that came with the printer, scanner then hook up the printer scanner to the computer and reboot, now if there was no update do the same thing with the software you have for the printer scanner . That would be to uninstall the printer scanner software disconnect the printer scanner, reboot and then install the software and then hook up the printer scanner and then reboot

Thanks for that suggestion - have tried with printer/scanner disconnected, but it won't install until I reconnect. Situation still the same. I forgot to mention that on start up I get a printer failed icon showing at the bottom right of the screen (it seems to stay there permenantly)

Have you gone into control panel to see if your printer and scanner are there? also have you gone into device manager and see if the scanner was there and if there were any yellow marks

Hi again

It is a Dell A920 printer (I believe it is a re-badged Lexmark). Have checked control panel - no media pending
