SDRAM

SDRAM w/ECC. What does ECC stand for? And what is the difference between SDRAM with or without ECC
(Beside the price difference)? If I have SDRAM w/ECC and I wish to expand my memory, do I have to upgrade memory w/ECC or can it be without?
Thanx in advance for your help.

Hey!

Here's all you want to know about ECCECC

(Error Correction Code)--An electronic method of checking the integrity of data stored in DRAM. ECC is a more elaborate error-detection method than parity; it can detect multiple-bit errors and can locate and fix single-bit errors. ECC usually uses three additional bits per byte of data (compared to one additional bit for parity).

All I can say is that as long as you get RAM that either all has ECC or doesn't have ECC, your ok. if you mix DIMMS (one having ECC and one not), you'll have probs.

Where do you look to find out if your RAM is ECC or non ECC?

Go into your BIOS setup when the system is starting and it will tell you there what type of RAM is installed. If you have ECC installed then that option will be enabled, otherwise there will be no mention of it.

You can mix ECC and Non-ECC memory, the problem is that if you do, the ECC property will be disabled for all installed memory which nullifies the reason for having it..

Look at the number of chips on the RAM
non ECC 8 chips
ECC 9 chips
