What kind of system do you have? Desktop? Notebook? Dimension? Inspiron?

oops. i have an XPST500 tower system. just got it in november. 128 m sdram, 20 gig hd yada yada....

Okay, now we're getting there. On the back of the tower, there's a white label with probably a 5 or 6 digit series on it - ex: 6BQV8 - that's your Service Tag number, which identifies YOUR system. On the box your PC came in, there should be a white label with a bunch of numbers (including the same Service Tag number, possibly inder the heading "Track Code." On your INVOICE and/or PACKING SLIP, you will also see your Service Tag number. NOW, on page 2 of your invoice (you DID save your INVOICE, didn't you?), or near the bottom if only a single page, you will see, once again, your System Service Tag Number, with the words "System Service Tag/Serial Number(s)" right above, probably. There you have what, for all practical intents and purposes, is your serial number, as far as Dell is concerned, if that's where the rebate is coming from. If you have any doubts, and have room on the rebate form, you might also note your Customer Number (probably a 7 or 8 digit number, top center of your invoice, top left on your packing slip, and your Invoice Number (top right of...you guessed it...your invoice!). That System Service Tag is your key to everything....they'll want it if you call for service (along with your Express Service Code, and your name and phone number as appears on their records). Best thing to do is write the SysServTag and ESC on a label and stick it on your tower or desk or something, so it's right there if you need it. And you can keep your invoice, etc., in that nifty little box with the velcro closer right there close, too! They think of everything, don't they?

All kidding aside, you should be all set with the System Service Tag number for just about any of your dealings with DELL. Any modifications, upgrades, etc., OUTSIDE of Dell, it's handing to have the invoice, because that has a detailed listing of what's in your system. It's great "Proof Of Loss" evidence for your Insurance Company, too.

It's funny, isn't it...all the places they show that number, and, near as I can figure, in only ONE place is it identified in connection with the words "Serial Number." Keeps us on our toes, I guess...

that figures. i didn't bother to look closely at the 2nd page of the invoice since it seemed like most everything was on the 1st page and something as important as a serial number would be there too. but yep, you're right. it says "system service tag/serial number".
