Service Tag doesn't match computer

Hi, I have an old Dimension C521. I'm trying to update the BIOS, but my service tag when entered into the dell website says I have an Inspiron 6400, which I don't? I don't want to update the wrong driver and cause problems, any advice would be appreciated?

Thanks

Martin

Hi Martin,

You may check service tag of your computer from system BIOS and verify if it is the same that you are trying to enter on support website. You may access system BIOS by following steps below:

  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as you see the Dell logo, start tapping the ‘F2’ key on top of the keyboard.
  • If you wait too long and the Microsoft Windows appears, then continue to wait until you see the Windows desktop. Now shutdown your computer and try again.
  • After this a new window would appear. You can only use the arrow keys of the keyboard to navigate between the options as the mouse is not functional in this mode.
  • Verify the service tag.

Is there any specific purpose to update the system BIOS?

The BIOS version 1.1.11 has enhanced compatibility for USB devices and contains changes that impact only certain configurations, or provides new features that may/may not apply to your environment.

You may download the BIOS for your computer from link: http://dell.to/YdOaQh  You may download rest of the drivers for your computer from link: http://dell.to/XrRI02

Note: Please connect your system to surge protector (If available) to avoid any unexpected shutdown. Any sort of interruption during BIOS update may damage system board.

Please reply for further clarifications.

Thanks Chimnay, I will do this. The real problem is that my wired network adaptor doesn't work properly, I have to uninstall it everytime and reboot to get it to work. I read somewhere about updating system bios. It's a Broadcom 440x adapter, which I understand may not work very well with Windows 7 which I'm now running?

Cheers

Thanks SpeedStep. It says C521 on the machine, do you mean it there's no bios for C521 so you have to use E521 or C521 never existed?
