Should Computer Beep?

Hi,
I have a Dimension 4100.....
When I push the button to turn on the computer, should I hear a few beeps sounds? I thought you were suppose to hear the beeps....
I also don't see the message reading it is now Safe to Turn off Computer....Should I see that message....
Thanks......

Let's take a vote. I have a 4100 and it does not beep. It also shuts down by itself so I don't get a "safe to turn off" screen.

I don't really know your first question, but mine beeps once and thats it. No, if your computer shuts off by it self, it doesn'tr matter if that screen shows up or not.

EdnaM, all kidding aside, though.... It has always been my understanding that beeps are codes that indicate a problem. Here is a page from my system documentation that shows you should not have beeps. Scoutkjp has a different system than ours. :-)

All i can remember of a friens 4100, is that it doesn't beep either. I'm not 100% sure, but I fairly sure it doesn't beep. If it beeps severl times, follow the instructions from the other guys.

Edna......if what you are referring to is the beep that most older computers got during boot-up, then that is called a POST (Power on, Self test) beep that indicates the POST is activated. I'm not sure about the 4100's, but on the 8100's like mine that POST beep has been done away with entirely. There are small lights on the back of the computer indicating various POST messages, they are interpreted by the way and which ones light up to determine the different things that could go wrong during the self test.

Do not adjust your vertical, do not adjust your horizontal......there is nothing wrong with your computer.......you have entered the Outer Limits.....IMAO

Seriously, there is'nt anything wrong, just the demise of that annoying little POST beep.

I had noticed this for awhile myself on my 4100, and figured the POST beep had been done away with, but I didn't know for absolute. Thanks for asking the question.

Edna, my computer never beeps on startup(which I like) and shuts all by itself. I read many months back on a post that this is referred to as a quiet boot and was set that way by Dell. I suppose there is a way to reconfigure so that it can beep at you, but why bother, progress marches on.

If you have Quiet Boot disabled in your bios, you will hear 1 beep if everything is found and in working order. If Quiet Boot is enabled, you will see the splash screen and hear nothing. hth.

How do I find out if the Quiet Bios is enabled?
