shutting down the computer

Please help! Everytime I try to log off and / or shut down my computer, it takes 2-3 attempts. After the 1st try, my computer is still on, although the monitor correctly shuts off, and I have to hit CTRL/ALT/DELETE to get back on so I can try again to get the power to shut off.

Why? And, more importantly, how do I get it to shut down correctly in the first place?

Thanks in advance for the help.

I don't know how to answer your problem, but you are not alone. I have been experiencing the exact same problems

Maybe Dell could post this on every forum once a day....

disable Norton antivirus autodetect of A-(floppy) drive on shutdowns...to end freeze-ups...

right click Norton icon near clock
left click Configure
left click + next to auto-protect
left click advance
UNcheck box "Scan floppies for boot viruses WHEN SHUTTING DOWN Windows"
click ok

The idea is that with no disk in the drive, antivirus autodetect is confused...it keeps looking for something to do...

The software starts up again when you turn on the pc and works just fine...

good luck...Kit
