Slow computer, stuttering sound, & clock wrong

I am running Windows ME and having problems with the speed of my system. My computer is only a year old. It has gradually gotten slower and slower. The sound files stutter. The clock is correct after I reboot but loses time as it is running. I have tried the selective startup in msconfig and deleted all of my temp files and still have the problem. Can anyone help?

Go to the Start button at the bottom of your screen, do a right mouse click and select explore.
On the left hand side of the screen you will see Start Menu highlighted in blue. Under Start Menu you should see a programs folder with a + next to it.
Click on the + to expand the folder.
On the expanded menu you will see a Startup folder. Click on it to select it.
If there are any icons on the right side of the screen, select and delete them.
These programs open and run every time you start up and run in the background even through you have not opened them yourself.

Most likely this is a software problem and over time the software on your system can get corrupted, more and more programs get installed, and files get fragmented. If you go to click start, run and type msconfig, you can go to the startup tab there and disable all startup group items. About losing time, if you let your computer run in the bios, does it lose time then? If not then you have a software program. The best solution of all if you want to do this would be to back up your important files and do a clean reinstall of windows. This will definitely make a difference.

Hi,

While I'm sure that Joanne means well, I do not suggest that anyone just go and blindly delete all their startup programs.

I would suggest going to Start/Run and typing in msconfig and pressing enter. If you would then click on the startup tab you could uncheck any startup programs to see if the problems are solved. Also, you may find that you want one of those startup items to run. If you use msconfig you can just add the check back and you are back with your program starting. If you were to just delete the shortcuts to the programs in the startup folder then someone here would be explaining how to get that program back and starting up again.
