SM Bus Controller

I just received a brand new Optiplex from Dell. Under Device Manager under Other Devices I have a "SM Bus Controller." It is not working properly. I have tried to update it and there are no updates to be found. I tried to just remove it but the system is picking it up as new hardware and is asking to update it. So it must exist. Does anyone know what the SM Bus Controller is? And how do I take care of it so the OS will be happy?

Thank You

We ghosted the the pc so it would be standard to the City. We then reinstalled the CDRW and DVD software. The ghost mainly consisted of Novell Network standards.

Thank You

I'm having a similar problem.  The driver to my SM Bus Controller isn't installed.  When I try to install from the Dell Resources CD, the hardware manager cannot find a driver that works.  Have tried installing a few times, but it just won't take.

Is there a place online where I can download and install the driver for this?  What does it do exactly?

Thanks.

OK guys, just reload the chipset and it took care of my issue. Dell has a step by step instructions of how to reinstall the chipset on there support site. Thanks for all the responses. Good luck

I just reformatted and installed Windows XP.  I have not changed one thing on the hardware configuration of my computer, which I just bought from Dell about 3 months ago (4550).

My onboard ethernet connection AND my SM Bus Controller do not have drivers installed after full installation of XP, and I cannot find the any drivers for them on my resource CD (nor any CD that came with my computer).  Can someone please tell me how and even more specifcally why they dont' load up on reinstall of XP.

(a link to the support site would be ultra nice btw :)

THanks.

Hi,

I just reformatted a 4550 for a client. When I reinstalled WinXP, three devices did not have the drivers installed with them. They were the ethernet card, the modem, and the SM Bus Controller which is the topic of this post.

For the ethernet card, I just used the Drivers CD that was included with Dell's distribution CD's that was shipped with the PC. If you dont have the CD, then it can be updated from the Dell support site.

The Modem was taken care of with the Modems Driver CD that came with the PC.

And the SM Bus Controller was fixed using the advice from a previous post on this thread. Reinstalling the chipset fixed this issue right up.

Email me at knockedlife@comcast.net if you have any questions.

I appreciate it. It worked.  So, do you know of a way to fix the ethernet controller as well?

TIA
