power supply failure wil typically generate a flashing yellow light.  since yours is solid the failure is likely the motherboard or processor.

if you are comfortable doing so... open the case and look for damaged capacitors.  seen it a thousand times.  if you find bulging or leaking caps then the motherboard requires replacement.

I read this too but the mobo is clean and seems in good condition, no leaking or bulging caps. The processor seems to be functioning well as well and there are no obvious errors. In fact, I work with this machine for 7 or 8 hours every day and everything seems normal - it'sjust start up that's causing problems. Would a processor / mobo fault really be so intermittent? I can't think why the pc only fails first thing in the morning and then starts up. Even if I switch off and unplug for an hour or so the same day, it's still fine. It's when it's left for a long time, as if it is cold!

Any how, thanks for the reply, I'll have another peek inside.

UPDATE

Well, the problem still persists. The PC starts after being 'warmed up' - that is, I leave it running on the solid yellow light for 30 seconds, unplug, wait 30 seconds and plug in again and it usually starts on the second or third attempt.

My question is, taking into account that this has been going on for at least 3 months and the PC is used for 8 hours a day with no problem once started; furthermore, if I leave it plugged in there doesn't seem to be same problem, it just seems to happen when it's been unplugged over night, is it more likely to be the motherboard/processor or the power supply?

I have my doubts because I have read so many conflicting views on the internet and have seen paople with the same problems as mine change the mobo or processor or power supply, or indeed a combination of the three and still not repair the fault.

Once again I thank you for your time ... and

...HELP!!!!

xiuxiuejar,
Having personally seen many, many GX270 motherboard failures over the past 4½ years I can tell you that the capacitors don't have to be bulging or leaking for there to be a motherboard failure. In 10+ years of troubleshooting PCs I've only witnessed 5 or 6 processor failures since the days of the Pentium 2.

That is what I feared. The intermittent starting is a sign of that with the solid yellow light. My biggest doubt is that the right hand corner of the PSU has a little black mark, like burning, but it is tiny.  My mobo is so clean and looks perfect, but as you say, the caps can lie.

Anyway, thanks for your reply.
