Sound card
I would like to replace the on-board audio on my XPS 420 by a SoundBlaster X-Fi Xtreme Gamer audio card.
There are a microphone and headphone ports on the front panel.
Are they still usable when a PCI card replaces the on-board SigmaTel audio ?

The sound quality won't be as good as when connected directly to the soundcard ports, but the ports on the front panel are connected to the motherboard, so you should still be able to use them :emotion-5:
Use the soundcard itself if at all possible though, or buy a soundcard which includes a front panel extension :emotion-55:
Those usually cost quite a bit more though, so one of the many 3.5"/5.25" combo multi-function/multimedia panels available might be worth considering instead?

There was a lot of discussion about this in the old XPS board. You may be able to get a cable from Dell to connect the new card to the front I/O. No experience myself but might want to read through these threads:
