Sound messes up

I have a new Inspiron with Vista and the X-Fi sound card. In the first days after i got my computer the sound would frequently "mess up", make cracking noises, for a second or two when playing songs in mediaplayer. It's not that the computer is working slowly, the file is played off in a constant tempo it just sounds like a kind of dub of very annoying noise. It doesn't seem to have that problem anymore when playing regular files in media player but now I am facing same problem when using Fruity Loops Studio. What can be wrong?

Right click on the sound icon in the taskbar, point to playback devices, click on the playback device then click properties, then click on the enhancements tab in the speaker properties window click on the box saying disable all sound effects click ok in both windows.
That should solve the crackling noises

I don't quite follow. I got to the "speaker properties window". I don't know what the "enhancements tab" is and I can't seem to find "the box saying disable all sound effects". I have unchecked a box called "Disable Sound Blaster enhancements", but that doesn't help.
