S/PDIF - need help

I had never heard of S/PDIF until I saw an output with that name on the back of my PC (XPS 200). I currently have an analog connection between my PC and Stereo to listen to music. However a digital connection would be preferable. Do you use an optical cable (like the ones used to connect your CD player, etc.) to connect from SPDIF output to digital (optical) input on the receiver. Also, just because there is a SPDIF output on my PC, does that necessarily mean that it is connected to the sound card?

I have an XPS 210 and use an optical cable to connect to a Denon 1906 AV Receiver and everything works well.

Thanks. I went ahead and tried it last night because it looked like it would work and it does. The only reason I didn't think it would is because the guy I talked to at Dell Tech Support told me it wouldn't. I am finding that these forums are much more helpful.

I have a XPS 410 and have a similar qs. Did you get a digital coaxial or a optical connection? It looks like a coaxial connection for the S/PDIF. Please let me know what type/make of cable you used.Tech support told me the same thing that it's not compliant and I told them they were wrong.

A standard digital optical cable is what fit mine and it sounds so much better than an analog connection.
