Speeding up Win98 boot?

I have a Dimension P100t upgraded with a 233MMX processor and Windows 98. It has 48MB of RAM.
It takes forever to boot-about 4-5 min. It pauses at the windows 98 screen for a long time, then at the DOS screen with a message @ the top of the screen "please wait". Then it pauses with the hourglass on a black screen. All of these pauses have no disk activity. Installing the new processor changed none of this. My wife has a P2 366 laptop that takes forever also, but not as long as mine.
Are there any settings that can be changed to avoid such waste? I thought everything was supposed to be faster with Win98.

thanks!

What is showing in your Autoexec.bat file? That could be where the @ is coming from....Start, Run, type in sysedit, OK. Post whatever it says, and we will help you sort it out. Then, Start, Run, type in msconfig. Go to the Startup tab. What items have check marks? Post the list here, chances are, there are apps running that don't need to be.

Thanks Ginny!
Here's the info you wanted:

autoexec.bat:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\sndtune.exe
rem - By Windows Setup - C:\MOUSE\MOUSE.EXE
SET LMOUSE=C:\MOUSE
@SET CLASSPATH=C:\PROGRA~1\PHOTOD~1.0\ADOBEC~1

msconfig startup:
corel quickfinder scheduler
system tray
scan registry
task monitor
load power profile
scheduling agent
corel perfect print
quickres
load=c|oplimit|ocraware.exe

I hope you can make something of this.
BTW, in case it matters, I have a USB scanner.

Thanks!

Alan

P.S. I like your cool graphic!

That @SET command in your autoexec.bat file, not sure what that is, I think it may be the scanner. Try this: Start, Run, type in sysedit. Go to the Autoexec, which is the first screen, place the cursor at the beginning of the first line, |C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM etc., type in @ECHO OFF, and hit Enter. This will drop everything down one line. Click File, close or the X at the top, and it will ask if you want to save the changes, yes, you do. This will stop it showing up at startup. I am afraid to tell you to delete this entry, as I don't know what it is.....The ones in msconfig, that I know to keep are: System Tray, and scan registry. Corel entries are probably your scanner, but not sure. Load Power profile, do you have power saving setup? Like sleep mode maybe? Quickres, I know is the icon for resolution in the tray, that is up to you. If you want that at startup, leave it, if you can start it manually, uncheck it. Do you have to change your resolution often? If not, I would lose it. The load line, I don't know. The scheduling agent, do you have things set up to run unattended, like scandisk or defrag? Perhaps someone else may have other advice for you as to what to keep and what you can dump.

Ginny,

Thank you very much for all your help! I will rename the old autoexec file and make a basic one and see what happens.

Thanks!
