Studio 540 Processor Help
Hello, I'm not very tech-smart and I was wondering does the Dell Studio 540 support all LGA775 processors? I'm looking to buy a new processor and right now I have an Intel Pentium E5200 and I was wondering if there were any upgrades that will make a pretty noticeable difference for around 80 to 100 dollars. I want one thats better for gaming such as World of Warcraft, StarCraft 2, and the soon to be released Diablo 3. Thanks for any help.

It's more than a hundred dollars, but you will get a noticeable difference, at least in your test scores ... as it's one of the older CPUs, I think it's compatible.
I used an E7400 in mine -- I had bought a barebones on eBay with an empty CPU socket, and sourced the processor from Newegg.
This may be of help: http://www.anandtech.com/show/2901/7 . It has a comparison graph between CPUs, with the E8600 near the top and competitive with some of the new i7s.

You might be better off investing the money in a new video card?
I had an E7400 CPU in my 540s.

Thanks, I actually just already ordered a new graphics card. You didn't really answer my question though. Do all LGA775 processors work with the Studio 540?

No, they won't all work, and I believe there were two variants of the mainboard, only one of which would work with quad-core CPUs. None of the $100-and-under CPUs would make a major difference over an E5200, although some of them support virtualization. Newegg has the E7500 for $131 and if your mainboard supports it, there's the Core 2 Quad Q9550 at $300 (half again as much as I paid for my Core i5 2500).

What about this one Intel E8400 Core 2 Duo Processor 3 GHz 6 MB will it make a noticeable difference and will it be compatible?

You can "pad mod" your E5200 and squeeze a lot more performance out of it. I "pad modded" my Q6600 and bumped it up from 2.4 GHz to 3.0 GHz. No need for a new processor anymore :P. People have reached 3.3 GHz on a E5200.
