System Bios Question?

I am helping a friend install a new PCI Graphics Card on a system that already has on-board graphics.  How do I disable the on-board graphics capabilities in System Bios.   The monitor is still connected to the on-board connector.  When I move it to the PCI Graphics Card connector I get no visuals.  Why is that?

Which model computer is it.  Without know the computer model, I can only guess that you would disable the onboard video in the section of the BIOS setup program under integrated devices.  Of course you would have to do this with the monitor connected to the integrated video control.  On reboot, you would then connect the monitor to the PCI video controller.

Generally, most Dell products have an option in the video area of the bios settings to change your video option to "automatic".  Using the "automatic" setting tells your machine to use the onboard graphics by default unless it detects another graphic solution is installed (such as a dedicated PCI or AGP video card).  If it detects an add-on video card it will "automatically" make it your default video source.

That is cool.

Too bad, the computer that i needed help on is not a Dell.

Mine is though.  I already have the 128MB ATI Radeon installed.

Although you're not working on a Dell still check the BIOS for the option to disable the on-board graphics.  That option is fairly common to most BIOS regardless of the manufacturer.

I forgot to mention if the BIOS doesn't have a setting to disable the on-board graphics then try looking at the motherboard.  There maybe a jumper to disable it.
