System freeze

I just purchases a P4 1.3g dimemsion 8100 computer and have been experiencing a lot of problems. It performs slower than my XPT 500.

1. The computer takes a long time to run after its been turned on. I tried turning off the norton antivirus and other programs in the start menu, but it is still slower than my old dimension XPT P3 500.

2. the computer often freezes when I open more than one windows. I can't reboot the computer just by pushing the reset button or ctrl alt delete, but instead i have to hold the power button for a few seconds.

What should I do? return the computer or upgrade the hard dirve

If you have a USB mouse then the USB cable for the mouse must be plugged into the primary USB port or else the mouse will take about 2 minutes to initialize. This may be the cause of your slow startup.

I also have problems restarting with ctrl-alt-del and there are some issues about Windows ME and shutdown that I am looking into. I haven't figured it out yet but hopefully someone here can point us in the right direction.

also if you do have the usb mouse go into control panel , system , device manager , mouse , click on Logitech-compatible mouse PS/2 once to highlight it , then click properties and check disable in this hardware profile. This will speed up the boot up time tremendously.I guess the computer spends time searching for a PS/2 mouse at bootup.I asume you have win ME. I don't know if this works for other operating systems.

THere are lots of complaints about slow 8100 models. When Intel shifts to .13 production, these early boards will lose most upgrade support.

I had similar problems and after many tests removing Norton Antivirus 2001 fixed all these problems! I have since switched to McAfee Viruscan for continued virus protection.

On 8100 models it does not matter WHERE the USB mouse is plugged into......the USB emulation in the BIOS MUST be turned off, regardless if you are using a USB mouse or not. Or else, the startup will go on and on until it times itself out, usually around 2 minutes. Once USB emulation is turned off, startup should dramatically improve speed-wise. For some reason, USB mice and keyboards have a conflict with these systems. Hope this helps, it's at least worth a shot.
