System freezes
I have a Dimension 733r that is driving me nuts. The system is constantly freezing up or programs stop responding. I have added ram to 512mg, installed a new system battery, installed a new hard drive 80 gb (I think I wore out the old one with all of the restarts), upgraded my OS from ME to Win 2000 and have reinstalled IE6 a few times. And I'm still having problems. I used Dell's recommendations to made sure that my system would be compatible with all upgrades. This computer was purchased new in Sept 2000.
Where do I go from here because I don't know if it is software, the motherboard, or if the BIOS is to old for the newer programs? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Martha

How much personal data is on the computer? if not much you can do a backup and clean install of windows. That will tell you if its software related.
You can troubleshoot it by removing parts (ie modem, cdrom ect) but its also a good possiblity of a cpu overheat problem..

Is your antivirus software up to date, and are you up to date on Windows patches (Service Pack 4 and subsequent updates)?
Try a spyware scan (AdAware, www.lavasoftusa.com).

Martha,
Upgrading from Me to 2000 is often times hampered with problems as they are different core operating systems and sometimes things are left over from the old OS that can cause lots of unexpected affects.
I would backup all the files, photos, favorites list, etc. Be sure you have a boot disk created and then do a clean install of Windows 2000.
FDISK the hard drive to repartition it and then REFORMAT it. Then reinstall Windows 2000 and reinstall your applications. This way you know everything is nice a clean.
This is not that difficult to do, but you may wish to have someone help you if it is your first time doing this.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I have downloaded and run several different spyware software programs and have scanned my system for viruses. It is really amazing the amount of junk that can be loaded to the hard drive without one even knowing about it.
I now have a system that still needs a little work but it's in better shape than it was a week ago. Please keep suggesting that people scan their systems on a regular maintence schedule.
Thanks again.
