system resources low

I have a new system (5 days). 256 megs ram. I have received one warning that system resources low. Checked system performance, and directly after reboot the best I can get is 80%. Should I expect better and if so what can I do to improve it.
Thanks
Rob

One thing that may help is to go to Start, Run, type in msconfig. Go to the Startup tab. There are probably many items that are not needed at startup of the system. If you aren't sure about some, post them here, and we will try to help you.

Another thing worth noting is that "System Resources" is not directly related to (only) your system memory. There are several other factors taken into account, including available GDI resources, base system memory (which on all PCs is the first 640 KB of RAM), upper memory (the area of remaining memory after the first 640 KB up to 1 MB), and other factors. Even if you have large amounts of system memory, any of the others could adversely affect your overall "System Resources" resulting in such messages. The most common cause of this is, as Ginny pointed out, having too many startup applications running.

I also have a low system resources problem. I have plenty of ram (384 mgs) and I've unchecked everything I can afford to in the startup menu. However, when I run the two applications I need for my work the resources drop to a value of 0!! Can I massage the virtual memory settings, and if so what min and max values should I put in?

Also I think I read somewhere that low resources is not a problem in Windows 2000...if that's true, why is that?

Cheers,

Claude

Hi David,
G. Lang suggested deleting Windows/Temp files and temporary internet files. I am scared! I am a computer newbie and don't want to just delete stuff until I hear the same thing a few times from people in the know. Also-my dimension xps-t came with a bunch of start up applications...how do I know which to keep and which to "uncheck" ? If they are not in the start up-how are they accessed ?
Thanx for your patience (and expertise).
Robin
(by the way-those signatures are really cool...could even I make one?!)

Deleting the files are fairly easy, and Windows offers a utility to safely do so. Double-click on My Computer, right-click on your C: drive, and choose Properties. There should be a System Tools or Tools tab in here; click on it. Choose the option for Disk Cleanup.

As for the Startup programs, many people gain assistance by posting their list here. Several users are adept at recommending which programs are good to keep and which are safe to uncheck. I'd recommend starting a new thread, as this one is fairly far back now, and not many are likely to read it if you just reply to this message.
