PRPCMonitor
*StateMgr

And depending on whom you choose to believe, PCHealth. Opinions vary as to whether this needs to be in there for Restore functionality.

Almost sounds like you might have to. I'm not exactly certain how this is achieved, but the links below might help you troubleshoot it enough to where you can learn whether you actually have to, and if so, how to use the SFP tool to get the files you might need..

drensin,

Try quitting all programs running in the background thru ctrl-alt-delete and end task on all programs except system tray and exolorer.
Be sure your A/V program is not scanning for viruses at the same time you try to restore.

Post back with any questions but Goonboy gave you some great sites to troubleshoot from.

Good Luck.

Well, thanks for all the help. I tried, but didn't work.
So .... I just went into the _Restore directory, found
the .cab I needed in Archive, and copied the USER, CLASSES and SYSTEM dat files, after making copies of the current ones
in the Windows directory. I rebooted, got an error message that the computer would fix a little registry problem, it restarted, and
good as new. I don't recommend this flying manually, but it
worked to fix my original problem, which was this:

My Wordperfect screwed up and the spell checker registry entry was corrupted. Hence, no checker and a few other things, and no help at all from WP web site, etc. I knew a sys restore would do it.

Now I just have make SysRestore work as intended.

thanks again
dr

drensin,

You might want to remove all past system restore points.
If you have one corrupt restore point all of the restore points after that will be corrupt as well. The reason for this is that future restore points are based on past restore points to a certain degree. This corrupt file will corrupt the rest that follow.
To do this disable system restore, reboot and enable system restore . This will purge your data store of all restore points including the corrupt ones. The only restore point you will have is the one from the last reboot.
It also helps to set the disk space for system restor to about 400mbs.

Good Luck.

I have the same problem since I (had to) reinstall NAV and Me. I can't make a new restore point and if I follow all the directions on the MS Kbase I still have the problem. I looked the _restore/arcquive directory but it is empty. I sent some email to MS and Dell but they refer to the MS Kbase (even after telling them that it does not work upon folowing KBase directions) for resolving the problem. Any suggestion? If so plase make a bullet list of what to do.
Thank you. Al

That's in fact what I did.
First I created a temporary directory to hold the three .cab's
folders that I knew were good, starting with the one that helped me back to normality, and two subsequent ones -- just to be safe.

then I disabled SysRestore, rebooted, re-enabled.

However, I think my problem is not that I had corrupted Restore points, but that Sys Restore doesn't work anymore, I don't know why,

Maybe it has something to do with Norton System Works, 2002, though I don't have automatic virus checking running in the background, only email and download checking.

I guess I should check around and see who else has this problem.

Where did you get these three .cab files? My _restore directory is empty.
Please respond soon. Thank you.

I got them from my _restore directory. I knew which .cab had the three files I needed that were uncorrupted. once i used them to fix my system i disabled restore, then re-enabled it. disabling erased all the old restore points. if your _restore directory is currently empty you won't have any saved points to work with so you can't use my approach. sorry. anyway you should never have to do it the way i did it -- it's dangerous. once restore works on your system just use it the recommended way.
