System setup ECC memory
My system was purchased with 2)128Mb ECC DIMM's. In reviewing the system setup I see notice two things. The ECC Configuration is set to [Non-ECC] and the L2 Cashe ECC Support is set to [Auto]. I have checked my documentation and while it is quite specific about having the ECC Configuration setting agree with the type of memory installed and having the L2 Cache ECC Support set to enabled with ECC memory it has no mention of the [Auto] choise. The only change I made to the system set up was to enable the Boot-time Diagnostic Screen. Is this configuration "[Non-ECC] and [Auto]" correct and optimum for my system?

Anyway, if you have a D___ series with all ECC memory, your system should be configured to ECC, not non-ECC, at least according to this information.
Again, since I don't know what system you are running, it is somewhat difficult to say, but I believe that at one point Intel was making P2 processors without ECC L2 cache; the auto setting would seem to be appropriate in that it would poll the cpu to determine whether ECC L2 cache was present.

Needing immediate gratification I called Dell support and "Pete" told me that this was a correct and optimized configuration for the BIOS version on my system (A09) so I haven't messed with it. I've also heeded the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" warnings about BOIS updates.
The advanced screen on my system setup does not have the the ECC Configuration selection shown in the second support screen you directed me to. I've just had nagging thoughts about having 256Mb of ECC Ram not being used effectively.

It just seemed contradictory to have ECC memory then to have [non-ECC] selected in the ECC Memory Configuration selection of the system setup menu. Especially since the documentation with my machine was specific about selcting [ECC].
