Yes, the temporary files can be deleted safely, in fact I delete mine daily, using CCleaner.

Also, check the size allocated to XP's 'System Restore', it's set to 12% of the hard drive by default.

System restore can be changed to 4-5%, which should be sufficient for most uses.

Open "System Properties" then click the "System Restore" Tab, adjust the "Disk Space to Use" settings to 4-5% .

Then turn off system restore by checking the box, reboot the system to erase the old system restore files.

After this, uncheck "Turn Off System Restore" box and reboot the system.

Open System Restore and create a restore point.

Forgot to mention, it sounds like it's time, to replace the 40gb hard drive with a larger IDE drive.  :emotion-5:

Yes, it is surely time to replace my dinosaur. In the last line of you suggestion: "Open System Restore and create a restore point." what restore point do I use? Do I do this by sliding the lever again? Sorry, I'm not real computer savvy!!

After you have delete all the exsisting System Restore points, there should be no points to use, until you have created one.

Leave the 'Disk Space To Use' slide at the setting you have changed it too.

The details for creating a Restore Point, are HERE
