System upgrade

I am upgrading an old desktop for my grandkids to use when they visit. The system is an older Vostro 200.

Motherboard - DEL OCU409        Processor E2140       1 gig of 667mhz memory

I would like to upgrade the processor to an E840 and the memory to 4 gb of 800 mhz memory.

I guess the main question is does the motherboard support the E840 processor?

Thanks

Hello CaseyXD,

The Vostro 200 was tested and shipped with the Intel Dual Core Processor E8400 (3.0GHz, 6MB Cache, 1333Mhz); Dell Part# Y935C. You may contact our Spare Parts and order the above processor. Contact number for Dell Spare Parts sales team # 1-800-357-3355 (US Customers only).

The system supports up to 4GB memory. You can get the memory modules here

Hope this helps!

Prior to installing the e8400 processor, you need to check that BIOS version 1.0.16, when support for newer processors was added, is installed.

Regards to installing 4gs of RAM, if you have a 32-bit system, this does not recognize 4gb of memory, 3±gb is all a 32-bit system can address.

Basically what it means is, while you can install 4gb of memory in the system, the reason it’s not recognized is mainly due to 32-bit processors and/or 32-bit applications on memory address limitations.

64-bit processors & operating systems will recognize beyond the 32-bit limitation.

Thank you for the reply, Bev. I have one additional question. I have downloaded the BIOS upgrade file  1.0.16. My current version is 1.0.5. I can't find any instructions how to run the .exe file. Do I run it from windows or under DOS. Can you point me to a blow by blow description on how to do the upgrade?

Thanks,

Klaus

Prior to installing the processor, you need the BIOS version 1.0.16.

All the installation instructions for flashing the Vostro 200 BIOS, can be found on the same page as the 1.0.16 BIOS downloads, in the Dell Drivers and Downloads.

http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/04/DriverDetails/Product/vostro-200?driverId=R199863&osCode=ww1&fileId=2731123001&languageCode=en&categoryId=BI

Best to use the 'Run the BIOS update utility from Windows environment' method.

Note: Read the instructions carefully, a failed, or corrupt BOIS update can brick the motherboard.
