System32/Config corrupt/missing
I have a Dell Demensional 3000 with a prompt issue about Config missing/corrupt.
"Windows could not start up because the fallowing file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS|SYSTEM32\CONFING\SYSTEM"
You can attempt to repair this file by starting Win Setup using the original Setup CD-Rom. Select "r" at first screen to start repair.
I tried to recover but go nowhere. I am hoping that I might run accross someone that is able to help me here.

Oh wait!
If this system has PC Restore on the hard drive, reboot and press Ctrl-F11 before XP starts to load. Follow the prompts to reset the hard drive to exactly the way Dell shipped it.
You will have to install the latest Service Pack (free from Microsoft) and all other Microsoft updates for everything. PC Restore takes ~10 min which is a lot faster/easier than a clean install. PC Restore wipes everything off the hard drive so whatever is there now is gone forever.

The Windows CD has to have the same version of Windows and the same Service Pack as are installed on the hard drive. Otherwise, the Repair won't run.

@ Ron, This may be one of if not the issue. I am not sure what SP/OS it started off with being that it was given to me. Ive been trying to reboot it with a XP SP2 upgrade and apparrently that isnt what it came with, maybe.

In that case, your only option may be to wipe the hard drive and do a clean install of XP, followed by drivers (in the correct order!) and software.
Note: Unless you're using a Dell XP SP2 Reinstallation CD, you'll need a valid license key to do a clean install from whatever XP SP2 disk you're using. But it has to be the same version, XP Home or XP Pro, that Dell installed or it's not legal. And if you're using a non-Dell CD, you can't legally use its license key to install XP on a second system.
Can you ask the original owner to request a set of CDs from Dell? You can't do it because you're not the owner that Dell hason file. If the original owner is in the US, they can request the disks here. Dell may charge for them.

Thnx big help.
I had to wipe it clean but no matter cause I had just bought a 1g xtern HD like a week before it took a dump on me so lucky there.
