The Device Cannot Start (Code 10) Dimension Audio with Win XP

The error message refers to my SB64V Sound Card and as Voice, Audio and Sound are greyed out I am unable to hear anything.
The problem started when I upgraded my hard disc and and re-installed Windows XP (naturally). I have managed migtae everything apart from the Sound Card.
I still have the original hard disc and switched back to it, reloaded XP and guess what the Sound worked!
According to the Device Manager both systems are using the same Driver.
What is the difference and/or the problem, has anyone any ideas.

Unfortunately, you omitted the most important part of your post, your Model Number.

However, many Dell's require the installation of "chipset drivers" before you can install drivers for devices such as sound.  If yours is one that requires the chipset drivers, install them then install the drivers for the sound.

If you don't have the chipset drivers, they can be downloaded, click on Technical Support at the top of the page, enter your service tag number or model number to access the downloads.

The machine is a Dimension XPS T600r.
Where do I find the Chip Set drivers for this beast?

Here is the link to the Dell downloads for an XPS600.  Is that also for an "R" model????

Thanks for the link.
I installed "Chip Set: nVidia SMBus, Driver, Windows XP, English, XPS DXG051, v.7.03, A00" as the only Chip Set on offer.
It made no difference even after Uninstalling the driver from Device Manager and letting the boot up process reload it.
Any other suggestions?

No, I don't have any other suggestions.  If I were there at the PC, I may come up with something but nothing that I can suggest trying to diagnose or fix the problem remotely.

Picture it, I have one Windows XP installation on an old hard disc that appears identical to another on a newer hard disc when installed in the same Dimension. The only difference is when I boot from the new disc the Sound card is stopped.
I have tried all the simple things with Device Manager and even removed the the new version, booted up, noted the Sound Card was missing from Device Manager and re-booted only to find Device Manager had connected to the Sound Card but it was still stopped.
Sounds to my non-techie mind like a difference somewhere inside XP.
Does that help?

It still sounds to me like something was not installed or didn't install correctly.  The chipset drivers define what is on the motherboard or what connections are to the motherboard (e.g. the SoundBlaster card) and if the chipset drivers are not installed (or didn't get installed correctly) it won't recognize devices or won't recognize them correctly.

Also, with SoundBlaster devices, when they are installed, you must not allow Windows to "search for" or "install" drivers for them.  You must cancel that function when Windows "finds new hardware" and wants to install drivers, and then after Windows starts, you install the SoundBlaster drivers from the SB install CD (or the Dell drivers CD).

In most cases, the install sequence (from a clean reformatted hard drive) is (1) Install the Operating System (Windows) (2) Install chipset drivers (3) install device drivers (e.g. sound) (4) install applications (and backed up user data), (5) install peripherals (do not have peripherals attached when you do the install).

Sorry to be a nuisance but every time I install the driver, Windows re-installs almost by magic.
So i attempted to set off Add Hardware and after Windows had finished its search, I disabled the SB driver and pointed Add Hardware to the SB driver and received the following error:
"The class  installer has denied the request to install or upgrade this device".
Do that help?

Incidentally I grew to sound of the Shadows playing Stratocasters and a brother strumming a Hofner Verithin.

Regards

Do not use the Add Hardware Wizard.  Normally, when Windows starts, and new hardware is detected,e.g. the soundblaster card, it will bring a window up that asks if you want Windows to search for the drivers.  Do not use this, instead just allow it to continue booting up and after Windows starts use your SoundBlaster install disc to install the drivers.  At least that is the way SoundBlaster has it designed to work.

(I have a Fender Telecaster, also.  And in the 50's I had a Hofner guitar in Germany).

No luck.

Even tried another sound card, i.e. an EMU10K1 with the same result.
Looks to my untrained eye as if XP has a problem as everything else on the machine appears to work OK.

Other than re-install XP, do you have any other suggestions?
