thermal errors on Precision 410

just bought a PIII 500Mhz Precision 410 on eBay and am experiencing thermal errors (with the thermal protection enabled in the BIOS [rev. A14] the machine will shut itself off after about 10-15 minutes of use).

The CPU fan is spinning though I can't say for sure if it is producing the appropriate airflow. I'm looking at replacing it with a new one.  Does anyone have any tips on cooling the system (specifically any 3rd party add ons that fit well with this system). Is it worth trying to replace the oem heatsink with a heatsink/fan combo from an external vendor.

Also, upon inspection, it seems to me that the processor is installed in the wrong SEC cartridge. This is a single CPU system but the CPU installed is in the lower SEC slot which according to http://docs.us.dell.com/docs/systems/deqkmt/en/eq_mt/OPTIONS.HTM#Overview is the secondary SEC slot? The terminator appears to be installed in the uppper slot (primary). The system boots fine and reports no errors until the thermal protection shutdown. Does the A14 BIOS allow you to use either slot as the primary in a single CPU system? The docs seem to indicate that a single CPU must be in the primary SEC slot. Could this have anything to do with the thermal errors (perhaps they are being reported incorrectly due to the processor not being present???). Is it worth the hassle of switching the terminator and the CPU around? Any suggestions/help is greatly appreciated?

Thanks...

We have over 100+ Dell 410's, in each one of them the processors are tn the secondary slot.

Really don't know what's up with that.

Does it help to know that the thermal diode is on the die in the SECC2 cartridge?

Useful info http://www.geek.com/procspec/intel/pentium3consumer.htm

follow the links for replacing the stock fan with an aftermarket cooler

I've had my dual PIII 550 mHz Precision 410 for over 2 years and just had my first thermal "event".  My box has been making a racket lately so I opened her, removed the microprocessor cooling fan, cleaned it with compressed air and put it back.  Now it's cutting off.  I'll start with ordering a new fan from Dell.

Sorry for the long story, but does your unit have the green plastic "shroud" that channels the air over the heat sinks?  It should have the Dell logo stamped on it.  If that's missing the fan's air may not be effectively cooling the processor.

Does anyone know if the Dell fan can be replaced with a higher quality ball bearing (quieter???) 3rd party unit?  I see that the Dell fan snaps into place with specialized plastic thingees so I would guess I'd have to drill holes in the box for an off the shelf unit?  Sounds tedious, but with the right coffee I'm willing.
