Thomson Speedtouch 330 Modem not recognised - Windows Vista

I have recently purchased a Dell Inspiron 530 that came with Windows Vista loaded.  I have a thomson speedtouch 330 adsl modem and have loaded the drivers for Windows Vista to my PC, however, during install I am asked to connect the modem to a usb port, which I do.  After about 5 minutes a message appears that says the hardware cannot be found and to ensure the usb cable is attached.  I have tried all the USB ports in my PC all to no avail.

The modem is about 3-4 years old and worked perfectly on my old toshiba laptop (windows xp).

Can anyone advise please?  Do I need a new modem?

PC Spec

Inspiron 530

Duo E4600 processor (2.40ghz,800mhz,2mb cache)

4gb RAM

500gb SATA hard drive

Windows Vista Home Premium

Thanks

HERE is the Thompson web page.  It has special instructions on what you need to do for Vista.

HERE it is again.  Not sure what happened.

By the way, I found that by doing a google search for "Thomson Speedtouch 330".

Thanks.  I have already followed these instructions (I downloaded the Vista update to a usb stick and copied to c:\temp on my PC), however when I plug the modem in (when prompted), after about 5 minutes I get the error that it does not recognise the modem (or indeed that I have plugged anything in!), I know it's not an issue with the port as I have plugged the USB stick in all the USB ports and they work fine.

Maybe there are some old driver files that I need to delete?

Any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks

I would suggest using the System Restore and restoring the PC to a date PRIOR to first attempting to install the modem.  That will give you a "clean start" point and then follow the Vista install instructions exactly.

System Restore can be accessed under Accessories/System Tools.

System Restore will not delete any user data or e-mails, but if you installed anything or installed updates after the Restore date, they will have to be reinstalled.

TJR1106,

You said the 330 worked (past tense) with your old Toshiba laptop. How long ago did it work with that system? Does it still work with the laptop? If other USB devices work with your new Dell & only the modem doesn't then process of elimination would indicate the Speedtouch is the problem.

Oh, just a little aside for fireberd:   Google Is Your Friend  :smileywink:

Thanks for the advice.  The speedtouch does still work with my Toshiba laptop.  I have spoken to my ISP and they have advised me to completely remove all files/drivers for the speedtouch and try to reinstall again, if I still have a problem I have to call them whilst I am on the PC (I am at work, PC is at home!).  They said Vista was tempremental with modems but should work.  I am going to try again at the weekend and hopefully will get it working, I will let you know.

Thanks for your help!

Really stupid question coming up...how/where do I get an ethernet connected modem?

Thanks

As mentioned the System Restore I referred you to will remove any traces of the Modem in your PC so you will have the "fresh start".

By the way, a USB connected broadband modem is the least desireable connection method.  It requires drivers and ties up the USB bus.  An Ethernet connected modem is the best method for connection and does not require the installation of any addtional drivers or software.

If you have to supply the broadband modem, rather than your ISP, there are many that use the Ethernet (RJ45 connector) interface.  In the US, most DSL service providers supply a modem as part of the service.    HERE is an example but it will depend on your DSL provider and what is compatible with their service - they specify specific models that must be used.

Just to let you know I removed all the drivers for the speedtouch and used the link for the vista update.  It now works!

Thanks for the advice.
