Transferring Data to New Computer

I just bought a new Dell - Dimensions 4600.  I tried to transfer data and when I put memory key into new computer the error message I got was - wizard cannot find your files and setting in source location.  Can someone help me?

As a guess, it sounds like the data didn't get written to the key on the old PC, just some "pointers" to the data.  Check your procedure to make sure you are actually writing data to the key.

regrey,

Adding to what fireberd said, if the icons on the memory key have little arrows, then they are shortcuts, not the actual files.

I'm not sure what you mean.  I put the key into the back of my old computer.  Saved the info on E drive.  Then I put it in the new computer.  There were no instructions on what to do after that.  I checked and the key says it has data but how do I download.  Sorry to be so dense.

Take the key back to the old PC, then using the Windows Explorer (file manger) actually browse the contents of the key and see what is really on it.  For example, if you copied a wordprocessing file to the key, check the original file  "filename.doc" to see how many bytes is in the file and then do the same thing with file that was copied to the key, check it to see if it contains the same number of bytes.

Many "key's" require formatting before using,  Did you format the key first?  That's another issue.  You didn't mention what Operating System the old PC is, but most older systems require a driver for the key (not supplied with the key from Dell) for the Key to operate with older Operating Systems such as Win98.  No drivers are required for Windows XP.

You might want to try filevan.com.  You can download a simple transfer program for 30 bucks, go to best buy and buy a laplink compatible cable for about 10 bucks and transfer all of your files quickly.

Thanks - I will check into the cable link.  I was told that it is best not to download everything because it takes up too much space.  Right?  Also, on my email, I successfully transferred my Outlook Express Address Book but when I tried to transfer the messages saved in folders, it said it would only transfer to Microsoft Outlook.  Is there a way of transferring my messages to new Dell using Outlook Express.  I never used Microsoft Outlook on my old computer and don't know what to do on that.

Thanks guys - you are great to respond.  I don't know anything about formatting the key -- where do I find out about that?  Also, When I went back to old computer the files I first downloaded aren't there anymore and they aren't on the key.  Did I lose them?
